How Harmful Can Stress Be?

We all experience stress through out the day and it is a part of our lives. We think of stress as something negative however, stress can also be positive. We call positive stress as “eustress”, an example of eustress may be getting a new job promotion or being given greater responsibilities. Distress is when stress becomes negative, when we face challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges.

Distress can lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach upset, chest pain and Sleeping problems. Stress aggravates when people consume alcohol, smoke tobacco or take drugs to relieve themselves. Little do they know, that instead of alleviating their stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, they inadvertently prolong the stressed state which causes more problems.

Distress is linked to numerous mental illnesses like depression and anxiety and may also cause other serious problems like heart attack, hypertension, stroke, immune system disturbances that may make you vulnerable to diseases like common cold, herpes, AIDS, cancers and other autoimmunne diseases like arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

Other day to day problems

  1. Overreaction to petty annoyances
  2.  Increased anger, frustration, hostility
  3. Increased or decreased appetite
  4. Social withdrawal and isolation
  5. Problems in communication, sharing
  6. Reduced work efficiency or productivity
  7. Little interest in appearance, punctuality
  8. Feelings of loneliness or worthlessness
  9. Difficulty in making decisions
  10. Forgetfulness, disorganization, confusion


How do we fight stress?

We all have our own coping mechanisms. What works for one person might not work for you nevertheless, there are some strategies used commonly by all.


    1. Doing what you love

Every time you encounter distress, simply do what you love doing, like your favourite hobby.

2. Yoga 

Yoga is used to relive stress by most people and is one of the best techniques to relax.

3Having a positive attitude
